Emmaus Cambridge is looking to appoint a new Treasurer to our Board of Trustees due to the retirement of our current Treasurer.

As our Treasurer you would play a vital role in the charity’s governance. Your responsibilities would consist of: chairing the Resources Committee, acting as Company Secretary, working with the Community Director and Board Chair in preparing budgets, management of accounts and the Annual Report and Accounts. In addition to this, the Treasurer is one of four Directors of our property subsidiary, will work closely and oversee the work of our Finance Coordinator and liaise with our Auditors.

Established 27 years ago, Emmaus Cambridge is the first of 29 communities across the UK and an independent charity, part of the UK Emmaus Federation. We are financially stable, with an annual income of just over £1 million and adequate reserves. Last year we built 10 more companion rooms, funded entirely from legacies and reserves.

We have a strong staff team and highly committed Trustee Board all of whom are passionate about making a difference to our companions, to proving our social enterprise model, to sustainable self-sufficiency and to provide support to other Emmaus communities around the world. The Board meets 4 - 5 times a year (evenings) and for an annual strategy day (Sunday). Trustees also serve on one of 3 Committees and are encouraged to volunteer in the community.

Emmaus is a homelessness charity with a difference, providing more than just a bed for the night. At Emmaus Cambridge we currently support 44 formerly homeless people, known as companions. Our Landbeach based community provides a home for as long as someone needs it, as well as meaningful work in our social enterprise. We sell a vast array of preloved goods and run a very successful café. We rely solely on generous donations from the public to fill our shop and are proud to be a minimal waste social enterprise, using shabby chic and upcycling to restore some of our donated items. This approach gives companions the opportunity to take stock of their lives, deal with any issues they may face, reconnect with loved ones and rebuild the self-esteem that is often destroyed when they become homeless.

Please note that the role will be subject to an enhanced DBS and fit and proper persons test.

If you are interested in discussing the role of Treasurer or would like to visit us (which is the best way to get inspired) please contact Matthew Last, Trustee Chair on 07860 724756 or Diane Docherty our Community Director on 01223 863657 Ext 232 or 07500 338477. We would love to show you around!
