A home, a job, a purpose: Emmaus helps individuals build new lives.
At Emmaus Communities, formerly homeless men and women live and work together in a supportive environment.
Everyone in an Emmaus Community has a role to fill and contributes to the well-being of the Community.
We have established the first Welsh Emmaus Community, in the Bridgend area and in doing this we have the support of Bridgend County Borough Council, Valleys to Coast Housing Association and the Welsh Government.
Our Community was a former sheltered housing establishment, and has been extensively refurbished and provides excellent en-suite accommodation for the Companions. We raised the funds to renovate the building and establish the Community, and have had great help from Welsh Government, The National Lottery Community Fund, The Henry Smith Charitable Trust and Emmaus supporters from across the UK. Other welcome assistance has come from The Moondance Foundation, Oak Foundation, The Waterloo Foundation, The Bernard Sunley Trust, The Bridgend Civil Charities Fund and The People's Postcode Trust.
Companions stay in the Community for as long as they need to. There is no pressure for them to move on until they feel ready. During their time at Emmaus they get the support they need, as well as the increased self-esteem that is gained from working together in the Community and supporting themselves and others. The Community is supported by seven shops in the South Wales area that are staffed by a full-time management team, volunteers and placements. These shops provide Companions with meaningful work opportunities.
This is our largest shop, the Second-Hand Superstore that sells a range of furniture, white goods and new mattresses, situated on Tremains Road, Bridgend.
There is also a shop in the centre of Bridgend, one in Porthcawl, Maesteg, Neath, Cowbridge and Aberdare. Click on the store name for more details or go to the 'Our Shops' section. We also have an online shop too!
As well as the work we are doing to support our Community, we have already saved tonnes of items from going to landfill by enabling people to buy donated goods at a reasonable cost.
We are happy to come and speak to community groups, and local businesses and organisations about what we do at Emmaus South Wales.
Emmaus South Wales is an independent registered charity, affiliated to the Emmaus UK Federation. Please note Emmaus is not affiliated to any political or religious organisation. So, if you would like to find out more, why not contact us?
