Preston schools unite for World Homeless Day

World Homeless Day 2018

On World Homeless Day 2018 (Wednesday 10 October), five Preston schools took part in awareness and fundraising activities to support homelessness charity Emmaus Preston.

Ashton Community Science College, Cardinal Newman College, Ribbleton Avenue Infant School, St Bernard's RC Primary School and St Patrick’s RC Primary School all took part in World Homeless Day activities.

Pupils at Ribbleton Avenue Infant School completed a variety of activities to raise awareness, support Emmaus Preston and people currently homeless.

“Ribbleton Avenue was a hive of activity on World Homeless Day and throughout the week. The Year 1 children hosted a harvest assembly in front of parents and the rest of the school. The children kindly donated lots of harvest food, which we gave to Emmaus Preston. The school council also gave lots of foil blankets to help the Preston homeless community keep a little warmer this winter.”

Jessica Kitt, Extra-Curricular and Healthy Eating Coordinator at Ribbleton Avenue Infant School

The purpose of World Homeless Day is to draw attention to homeless people’s needs locally and provide opportunities for the community to get involved in responding to homelessness, while taking advantage of the stage an ‘international day’ provides.

“We are extremely grateful to all the Preston schools that have taken part in World Homeless Day activities. Their generous support will have a direct positive impact on the people supported by Emmaus Preston.

“With the kind support of individuals, businesses, schools and partner organisations, Emmaus Preston is able to continue to offer a home, training and work opportunities to people who have experienced homelessness.”

Stephen Buchanan, Director of Emmaus Preston

Emmaus Preston supports formerly homeless people by providing a home and meaningful work in a community setting. The charity operates three large social enterprises in the city, providing valuable work opportunities whilst generating an income to help sustain the support offered by Emmaus Preston.
