Local upcyclers help us celebrate Social Saturday
To celebrate this Social Saturday (14 October 2017) Emmaus Preston is selling 10 unique upcycled items and holding a one-day 10% off sale at the Preston Megastore, the largest charity shop in the country.
A group of upcyclers from across Lancashire have transformed 10 furniture items as part of Emmaus Preston’s Upcycle Challenge. The money raised from the sale of the upcycled pieces will be used by Emmaus Preston to help homeless people get off the streets and move forward with their lives.
Social Saturday is a national campaign that raises awareness of the impact social enterprises make in the local community. Social enterprise is integral to Emmaus’ work. Not only does it provide meaningful work for companions (formerly homeless people) so they can re-build their self-esteem, but it also generates vital funds to provide accommodation and support for those living at the Emmaus Preston community.
“We invited 10 local upcyclers to transform an item of donated second-hand furniture. Participants had three weeks to complete the makeover before bringing it back for sale at the Emmaus Preston Charity Megastore. The items are for sale from Social Saturday and the winner will be the person who adds the most value to the item.”

Emmaus Preston supports 25 formerly homeless people by giving them a home, meaningful work in a social enterprise, training and an opportunity to rebuild their lives. The social enterprises stock a range of donate and refurbished furniture, electrics, household items, CDs, vinyl records, books and bikes.
“Social enterprise is such an important element of the Emmaus model as it offers so much to the people we support, the sustainability of our charity and the public. This Social Saturday we are giving people a chance to support our work by purchasing unique items and giving an added discount to the already great value furniture we stock.”
