Emmaus North East opens new social supermarket
Emmaus North East is proud to announce the launch of its new social enterprise, Lucie’s Pantry.
The social supermarket, which opened its doors to the public on 23 July 2019, provides a different model to food banks. The service is via a membership for those living on the breadline. Members pay £2.50 a week for a subscription and are then able to choose items up to the value of £15. There are currently 15 members benefitting from the service.
John Harrison, Executive Lead for Emmaus North East, said, “Lucie’s Pantry is going to revolutionise the way people view shopping for food and essentials. Given that it is not a food bank, it will go a long way to providing local people who are struggling to support themselves and their families with empowerment and a sense of pride.
“We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of our local community, who have actively supported us in this new venture. Solidarity plays an important role in the Emmaus ethos, and by giving back to those who most need our help our community will only continue to thrive and flourish.”
Lucie’s Pantry will be open every Tuesday, 9am – 5pm. For more information and details on how to get involved or donate items, please visit our Lucie's Pantry page.
