Emmaus North East is the first Emmaus community in the North East of England.
Emmaus communities provide a home and meaningful work for people who have experienced homelessness, helping them to find a way to move on with their lives.
Companions, as residents are known, work in their community's social enterprise. In the North East, that involves house clearances, collecting, renovating, up-cycling and selling donated furniture and other household goods in our shops.
This work supports the community financially, and enables residents to develop skills and rebuild their self-confidence.
We officially opened our North East community in September 2017, with a visit from Emmaus UK President, Terry Waite CBE.
Our community building has rooms for up to 15 formerly homeless people, and we're delighted to be able to take referrals from both South Tyneside and further afield.
To make a donation to our shops, you can bring small items to either of our stores, or contact us for free collection of larger donations. Please think of us before you send your unwanted items to landfill!
