Hidden Heroes 2019 - Companion category winner
Emmaus UK has teamed up with Room to Reward to offer Emmaus companions, volunteers, trustees, staff and those supported by the charity the opportunity to be recognised by their peers and win a two night break to reward them for the work they do for Emmaus. Room to Reward was created to say thank you to “Hidden Heroes” - the inspirational people who do so much in the name of charity. Winners are awarded a two night bed and breakfast hotel stay, for themselves and a guest, at a choice of hotels throughout the UK and Europe.
Christian is a companion at Emmaus Village Carlton and was nominated for the 'Companion Hidden Heroes' Award due to his use of practical skills and his ability to lead and motivate others.
He raises additional funding for Emmaus Village Carlton by running recycling days. This involves customers choosing a piece of furniture to recycle and, under Christian’s guidance, learn to use their own artistic and creative flair to produce a truly unique piece to have in their home. He is continually identifying and collecting items that can be used for these days and they prove very popular.
Christian is also passionate about supporting people experiencing homelessness and sleeping rough. Christian leads a team as part of the Emmaus Village Carlton homeless outreach; The Rucksack Stomp. Every week, companions take backpacks full of sleeping bags, warm clothing and food to distribute to those sleeping rough. He motivates other companions to join him as a team and shows care towards those he meets experiencing homelessness. Having been homeless himself, he is empathic in his approach to this outreach programme.
Christian has contributed to raising funds, helped develop companions, volunteers, staff and trustees, lived the Emmaus ethos of solidarity and enhanced the reputation of Emmaus. Thank you Christian!'
