Hidden Heroes 2019 - Solidarity category winner

EHH Nicholas award crop 3

Emmaus UK has teamed up with Room to Reward to offer Emmaus companions, volunteers, trustees, staff and those supported by the charity the opportunity to be recognised by their peers and win a two night break to reward them for the work they do for Emmaus. Room to Reward was created to say thank you to “Hidden Heroes” - the inspirational people who do so much in the name of charity. Winners are awarded a two night bed and breakfast hotel stay, for themselves and a guest, at a choice of hotels throughout the UK and Europe.

During his time living in the community as a companion, Nick was always there to help others. If someone needed an out of hours delivery or if another companion needed picking up from the hospital, he would always be the first to volunteer, no matter what time of day or night it was. When a companion was battling cancer, Nick visited him in the hospice and was then fundamental in setting up a fundraising challenge in his memory when the companion passed away.

In his time at Emmaus Leeds he has walked the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge twice; climbed Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon; walked 29 miles between Leeds & Skipton and completed Ride London 100. He has helped raise a total of £3,000 for his local hospice as well as £1,000 for Emmaus Leeds. Nick has also completed downhill bike races to raise money for flood victims and attended a Paris Salon.

When other companions needed training to complete fundraising walks, he gave up his Sundays (nine of them in a row before the Ben Nevis climb) to take them out to the Dales to practice hill walking. He has been involved in many external projects where he represented Emmaus; has given speeches about his experience; interviewed on BBC radio stations; provided local TV interviews and has always represented Emmaus with pride. Since utilising the Move On process, he has continued to volunteer one day a week, driving Emmaus vans and working in the warehouse. Nick is also involved in a project called ‘Performing Britain’ supporting a team of companions to create a theatre piece. He is also planning another downhill bike challenge for summer 2019 to raise money for Emmaus.
