Huge thank you to our Marathon runners
Members of Team Emmaus recently took on the Virgin Money London Marathon to raise vital funds for Emmaus in the UK.
The eleven runners raised a phenomenal £20,401.36 for Emmaus UK, Emmaus Greenwich and Emmaus Salford.
Abigail Hodge, who secured an Emmaus UK Golden Bond place, said “I am in awe of the work Emmaus does in supporting homeless individuals in rebuilding their lives through living and working in a supportive community and eventually hopefully by gaining employment and independent accommodation. When I saw there was a place available I wanted to take the opportunity to fundraise. It was my fifth marathon and it went brilliantly. I beat my ideal target time and I’m very proud!”
Unlike Abigail, Stuart Browning had never run a marathon before but was inspired by a visit to Emmaus Greenwich. He explained, “I work for the Finance and Commercial team at ATOS and we chose Emmaus as a charity partner. Visiting the Emmaus community in Greenwich motivated me to take on the marathon and raise as much as I could to help improve capacity at the site, so it can continue helping more people. The marathon was the toughest thing I’ve ever done so I was glad when I’d finished it and was convinced I’d never want to do one again but after a few days I do think I’d be up for it again.”
Richard Summers secured his own place through the London Marathon ballot and decided to run in aid of Emmaus UK. He said, “I am a big believer in the work Emmaus is doing, providing people with the opportunity to improve their lives. Having shopped in Emmaus stores, I have also personally benefitted from Emmaus’ work as I ended up with some lovely upcycled furniture!
On the day of the Marathon the crowd was so amazing – total strangers cheering for you is very heart-warming and makes for a terrific atmosphere. Crossing the finishing line gave me such a sense of achievement, followed by a strong desire to eat chocolate!”
