Emmaus Oxford celebrates superstore grand opening
Emmaus Oxford recently celebrated the opening of its new purpose built superstore on Barns Road. The store, thought to be the largest charity shop in Oxfordshire, replaces the old superstore on Westlands Drive in Northway.
The new social enterprise store forms part of the new Cowley Community Hub development, and was designed by HAB, the design practice of Kevin McCloud from Channel 4’s Grand Design.
Commenting on the new store, Wyon Stansfield, Development Manager at Emmaus Oxford said: “We are delighted that the long-awaited new store is finally up and running”.
“It has taken six years, but the beautiful new space offers vastly improved facilities for our companions to process, clean and repair donated items, helping them to learn new skills, gain work experience and turn their lives around. It is also very good news for the environment in Oxford, as we save around 250 tons of household goods from ending up in landfill each year. None of it would have been possible without the extraordinarily generous support of many individuals and grant-giving bodies who we want to thank wholeheartedly.”
The opening of the store culminated with a launch party, and included a host of free activities for all. There were also a series of special guest appearances throughout the day. Amongst those attending was TV antiques expert Jonty Hearnden, who cut the ribbon to the store at 9:30am, before being on hand to appraise antiques and artefacts brought in by the public until 10:30am.
Other guests included ‘Annie Sloan Paints’, who held a hands-on upcycling workshop and ‘The Art Room’ who ran a series of children’s arts and crafts activities.
Commenting on the benefit the new superstore will make in the local community, Kelly O’Connor, Retail Manager said: “We hope to become a hub of the community, a place where Oxford shoppers knows there is always an amazing bargain and everything needed for the home, from a teaspoon to a three-piece suite”.
