Emmaus community cooks to success

Jo and David

Emmaus Leeds has partnered with Jamie’s Ministry of Food and Love Food Hate Waste to provide training to formerly homeless people in a bid to improve their diets, wellbeing and cut food waste within the community.

Over the past 12 months the charity has trained 22 companions – formerly homeless people who live and work at Emmaus Leeds. Not only has this transformed the diet of Emmaus Leeds’ community members, it has also helped to save the charity almost £6,000 on their food shopping bills.

David Heron is a companion at Emmaus Leeds who has completed four courses and is due to start the advanced course with Jamie’s Ministry of Food.

“The courses I have completed whilst at Emmaus Leeds and experience gained have helped me to have a better understanding of cooking and how to better utilise different ingredients. The skills I’ve learnt has also inspired me to expand our menu in the Emmaus Leeds café.”

The courses completed by companions include food hygiene, basic cookery, advanced cookery, baking and butchery at Jamie’s Ministry of Food as well as Love Food Hate Waste training. As a result of this training, Emmaus has reduced its food waste by around 70%, cut the cost of food bills and established food share partnerships with other organisations in Leeds.

"Emmaus Leeds has seen a massive improvement as a result of our drive to train companions and promote healthy eating within the community.

“The Love Food Hate Waste training really helped us get more organised when we receive food deliveries and have a plan in place to ensure the ingredients we prepare are at their freshest.”

Emmaus Leeds supports 26 formerly homeless people by providing them with a stable home and meaningful work for as long as they need it. The charity has its main base at St Mary’s Street and runs two shops at Kirkgate Market where they sell donated furniture, clothes, books, bikes, household goods and upcycled products.

Emmaus Leeds also runs a café at its St Mary’s Street store and has recently launched a new menu with a special meal deal every Sunday.
