HSBC volunteers dig-in during National Gardening Week

HSBC volunteers at Emmaus Merseyside

A team of volunteers from HSBC Bank have dug-in to support homelessness charity Emmaus Merseyside this National Gardening Week, 30 April - 6 May 2018.

On Thursday 3 May, a group of 12 HSBC employees spent the day volunteering at Emmaus Merseyside. The team worked alongside formerly homeless people in the charity’s Participation Garden and neighbouring public space, helping to install flower beds, building a raised growing bed and carrying out a wide range of gardening work.

“After helping Emmaus last year we were all really excited to be invited back. The team and I had a really enjoyable day and even managed to pick up some skills for the future. We are already planning on our next volunteer day with Emmaus.”

Beth Cotton, Personal Assistant HSBC Bank

Emmaus Merseyside supports formerly homeless people by providing them with a stable home and meaningful work for as long as they need it. The charity runs a social enterprise selling donated furniture, clothes, books, bikes, household goods and upcycled products, from three retail outlets.

National Gardening Week was launched seven years ago by the Royal Horticultural Society and aims to become the country’s biggest celebration of gardening. Thousands of people, gardens, charities, retailers, culture and heritage organisations and groups get involved each year.

“We are extremely grateful to HSBC for the support they have given to Emmaus Merseyside. Their employee volunteers completed some great work on our Participation Garden during National Gardening Week and we will benefit from this work with fresh home-grown produce throughout the coming year.”

Angela Quinn, Business Manager at Emmaus Merseyside

The employee volunteer day at Emmaus Merseyside is part of HSBC’s ‘Supporting our Community’ programme, allowing staff the time to help local grassroots projects. In 2016, through the HSBC programme, 64 projects received over £573k of funding and nearly 1,000 employees volunteered over 8,500 hours of their time.
