Melton shop volunteer speaks out

Volunteer Darren

Darren Stanley (29) is a regular volunteer in our charity shop in Melton Mowbray’s Market Place. During national Recycle Week (25th September – 1st October 2017) he is now calling on people from his hometown to donate and “recycle” unwanted items of furniture to help stock the shop.

Born and bred in Melton Mowbray, Darren regularly gives up his time to serve customers and sort donations.

Each year, Emmaus Leicestershire & Rutland ensures that over 3,400 pieces of furniture, including wardrobes, beds and three piece suites, are saved from the rubbish tip. Instead,we offer a free collection service for items in good condition. The collected goods are then sold in our Melton Mowbray charity shop, in addition to those in Hinckley.

Darren is proud of the work he does:

Members of the public often come in to drop off items for us to sell, and I make sure I’m there at the door to assist – a friendly face is very important when people are being so generous. Sometimes people will call us to let us know they have something large they can’t carry in; we’ll make an appointment to come and collect it in our van. It’s always exciting when we get something we know is going to sell well in the shop. We often get some really nice pieces of furniture in, and it’s great to think all this money is helping the homeless right on our doorstep."

We providee a home, support and meaningful work for 16 formerly homeless individuals. Some stay for a while as they gain confidence and skills before they are ready to move on to independent living; others are in need of longer-term support and are able to stay for as long as they need to.

Shop Manager Alan Townend said:

I’m a Melton man myself so I know how much goodwill there is in our community. We hope that gradually more people will get to know about our free collection service and give us a call – saving furniture from ending up in landfill and helping to raise funds for their local homelessness charity at the same time."
