Emmaus Leicestershire and Rutland formed as group in 2011 and opened to companions in June 2012.
We currently house 16 formerly homeless individuals in our community house ‘Elm Lea’. Elm Lea was built in the 1850s and previously ran as a hotel. This means that all of our companions have their own double room and private bathrooms, as well as many large communal areas where they can socialise.
Companions can stay in our community for as long as they need to. Some stay for only a few months in order to get themselves back on their feet before returning to independent living, but for others Emmaus will become their permanent home.
The first of our businesses, ‘The Emporium’, opened in October 2012. The Emporium is a true Aladdin’s cave and we sell everything you could think of, from large pieces of furniture to tiny trinkets.
Our clothing shop ‘La Boutique’, opened in November 2013. La Boutique is a high street shop and sells clothing, including bridal wear and accessories, small pieces of furniture and bric-a-brac, and is everything you would imagine a boutique to be.
Our Melton Mowbray charity shop was opened in 2017, and sells a great selection of pre-loved furniture, bric-a-brac and clothing.
Going forward we hope to raise the number of companion beds to 20 and open new businesses to support this ambition. Support our work and visit our social enterprises..
