A pair of formerly homeless people are preparing to take part in the RideLondon-Surrey 100 cycling challenge to raise money for homelessness charity Emmaus Leeds.

Companions Nick and Vinny, who both live and work at Emmaus Leeds, are training to take part in the RideLondon-Surrey 100 on 29 July – a 100 mile challenge on the same closed roads as the professional cyclists competing in the RideLondon-Surrey Classic.

Emmaus Leeds supports 26 formerly homeless people by providing them with a stable home and meaningful work for as long as they need it. Nick and Vinny have received support from Emmaus Leeds over the past few years and are keen to give something back.

“Both of us are getting ready to move on into full time employment and independent accommodation and we have decided to take on the challenge of entering Ride London 100 to raise money for Emmaus Leeds.

“We want to say a huge thank you for all the support and training we have received during our time here. Through doing this I want to raise money to help give other homeless people the same chance that I had at Emmaus Leeds.”

The concept of solidarity, helping others less fortunate than yourself, is a central ethos of Emmaus and a motivation for Nick and Vinny to complete the challenge. They are currently training for the 100-mile cycle ride and appealing for donations.

“I want to prove to myself and others that people who have experienced homelessness can do more and achieve more than they think. Please help us to reach our target of £1,000 so that we can say a huge thank you to the charity that has given us the tools to rebuild our lives.”

Emmaus Leeds has its main community building and social enterprise on St Mary’s Street. The charity also has a shop in Halton and a stall at Kirkgate Market. All the proceeds are used to support formerly homeless people who are members of the Emmaus Leeds community.

“It’s great to see the development of Nick and Vinny whilst they’ve been at Emmaus Leeds. The pair are keen cyclists and it’s fantastic that they’re using this passion in a positive way. I wish them well in training, fundraising and on the day of their RideLondon cycling challenge.”
