Tyler and Sheryl's cookery success

Tyler and Sheryl

A pair of formerly homeless people supported by Emmaus Leeds, have found the recipe to success at Leeds cookery school, Jamie’s Ministry of Food.

Emmaus Leeds companions, Sheryl and Tyler, recently completed an 8-week training course at Jamie’s Ministry of Food, based in Kirkgate Market. The pair are now using their new found knowledge and skills to cook up fresh meals at the Emmaus Leeds Café social enterprise and community kitchen.

Tyler, a companion at Emmaus Leeds who has completed the course, is now due to start the advanced course with Jamie’s Ministry of Food.

“The course has built up my confidence and given me the skills to create some great dishes at the Emmaus Leeds community kitchen. This knowledge will also set me up well for when I move on from Emmaus as I now have skills for employment plus the ability to create good, healthy, affordable meals at home. I’m looking forward to the advanced course to further develop my practical skills and open my eyes to a wider range of recipes and ingredients.”

Emmaus Leeds supports 26 companions – formerly homeless people who are provided with a stable home and meaningful work for as long as they need it. The charity has its main base and café on St Mary’s Street and runs two shops at Kirkgate Market where they sell donated furniture, clothes, books, bikes, household goods and upcycled products.

“Big congratulations to Sheryl and Tyler for their achievements at Jamie’s Ministry of Food. This training will be of great benefit to them both personally and through the tasty meals they prepare for the community at Emmaus Leeds.”

Donald Forrester, Chief Executive at Emmaus Leeds

Jamie's Ministry of Food at Kirkgate Market is part of a national network of local food centres and cookery teachers. The centres offer training to educate and empower people to prepare quick, healthy and cost-effective meals.
