Solidarity

At the heart of the Emmaus movement is the concept of solidarity; not only do companions work to support themselves, they also work to help others.

Communities show solidarity in a variety of ways; sometimes surplus income generated from the community business goes towards starting new Emmaus communities, sometimes it is donated to other local charities or appeals.

Emmaus Hastings & Rother recently joined forces with local housing association AmicusHorizon to provide a shuttle bus service for low income residents to travel easily to and from the Emmaus superstore, purchasing items at a discount.

We also provide home starter packs (kitchenware, crockery, cutlery and linens) to low income families and work with local charities, HACT, Magdalen & Lasher and Hastings Lions Club, to aid recipients of grants to furnish their homes.

In the past we have worked with Snowflake Night Shelter and The Seaview Project, providing winter clothes and food for those that benefit from their services.

We always work closely with other Emmaus communities to support each other and exchange advice and ideas.
