Our history

Emmaus Hastings & Rother was formed in 2005, with the help and support of Emmaus Brighton & Hove.

Constructing the Pods

Grants from other Emmaus communities provided the initial funding we needed to buy the Southern Water site in August 2009 and a grant from the Social Enterprise Investment Fund meant we could start building the accommodation block.

We opened the doors of our superstore in October 2009, and 18 months later welcomed our first companion.

Community activity is focused in and around our charity superstore. Here we receive donated furniture and household goods, carry out any necessary repairs and safety testing, and then offer them for sale to the public. Run by companions, volunteers and trustees, our shop is already an important part of Emmaus Hastings & Rother and since the addition of our café, a great place to browse and relax with one of our delicious cakes.

The development of a successful community requires a great deal of dedication and hard work from people motivated by the Emmaus ethos, as well as significant financial support from those that believe in our efforts. We could not have come so far in so short a time without the hard work and support of our staff, companions, trustees, volunteers and supporters and we continue to be grateful for their commitment.
