I started as a volunteer by chance really. I wanted a chair refurbishing and found out that Matt, Emmaus Dover’s resident upholsterer, was willing to train me. This sounded like a great opportunity so I jumped at the chance.

Matt trained me up in how to refurbish the chair from scratch and that grew into a regular volunteering place. I had my DBS check and now I volunteer twice a week, refurbishing items that can be sold in the Emmaus Dover shops.

I love bringing old pieces back to life and making items that would end up on the rubbish heap saleable again. It gives me immense satisfaction knowing that someone likes it enough to buy it and the money raised goes to support people at Emmaus Dover.

As a volunteer at Emmaus I’m hoping to build my woodworking skills and further improve my upholstery skills. To all the people who support Emmaus; keep donating and buying items because all the money raised really does support formerly homeless people.
