Sleepout raises funds

We'd like to thank the young people who participated in the Coventry Big Sleepout, organised by the National Citizen Service (NCS) Coventry Youth Board.

Last month, the NCS Youth Board for Coventry kindly organised a sponsored sleepout to raise awareness for homelessness. Emmaus Coventry & Warwickshire received proceeds from this sponsored event.

Young people from around the area gathered at Centre AT7 in Coventry and slept on makeshift boxes for the night. They participated in interactive games and listened to inspirational stories about people who have experienced being homeless.

After my experience of staying the night outside, I have come to realise that the difficulties and hardships faced by homeless people require the utmost strength and willpower. Life is a difficult experience and those who face the worst of it are the homeless."

We’re delighted that the young people chose to support our charity. They are clearly passionate about helping us and it means a lot that they decided to experience what sleeping rough might feel like. The problem of homelessness is more pressing than ever and we really do appreciate their efforts. The money raised will help us continue our work to change the lives of formerly homeless people.”

Here is a poem written by one of the young people, following the Big Sleepout experience:
