Become a trustee

Join our Board of Trustees and use your entrepreneurial flair to support people out of homelessness.

Courtyard, companions' accommodation blockEmmaus is a homelessness charity with a difference, providing more than just a bed for the night.  Companions, as our residents are known, are offered a home for as long as they need it, as well as meaningful work at our social enterprise – our store in Landbeach where we recycle and sell preloved furniture and other household goods, donated by local people. This approach gives companions the opportunity to take stock of their lives, deal with any issues they may face, reconnect with loved ones and rebuild the self-esteem that is often destroyed when they become homeless.

We are looking for 2 more hands-on trustees to sit on our board to develop our strategic approach to dealing with local homelessness and developing our companions. New trustees will bring either or both:

  • Business acumen to help us achieve our goal of financial self-sufficiency through our social enterprise. They would provide strategic advice, creative ideas, and support to the staff in implementing them.
  • An appreciation of and experience in one of the caring professions (social work, medicine, homelessness, housing, social exclusion). They would provide a perspective on and support for the needs of our companions.

The role will require a time commitment of at least 10 sessions per year for board and committee meetings, one annual strategy day each year and we also ask that our trustees try to volunteer in our community and social enterprise at least one day per month (or equivalent).

It is not necessary to have previous Board Committee experience as training will be provided. This position would, therefore, suit an individual taking their first steps to develop wider board level and governance experience

The role will be subject to an enhanced DBS and fit and proper person test.

If you are interested in becoming a trustee, you can find out more at www.emmaus/cambrige.org and you can call our Community Director, Diane Docherty, on 01223 863657 Ext.232

Closing date for application is September 2018.
