Lyn's story

Lyn volunteer

I was born and raised in Hartlepool and moved from there just before I got married. I’ve had various little jobs over the years but my main job has always been raising my family. My husband ran his own computer company and I helped out there as admin manager. I lived in America for three years and worked in fashion.

I heard about Emmaus when a member of the public asked me where it was and I didn’t know. I had never heard of it so I walked around Hinckley until I found it. I was amazed at how big it was and how much stuff was in there. I had never really been much of a charity shop shopper but this really blew me away.

The more I learnt from talking to the companions and staff, the more I loved what this charity stood for. One day I was talking to the shop manager and she said to me ‘well why don’t you come and volunteer for us,’ and the rest as they say is history!

When I first started volunteering at Emmaus I helped out with the bric-a-brac, but over time I’ve been pulled more towards helping run the café. To be honest I’m just happy to help out where I am needed. I am certainly the mother of the group, I love cooking and baking and always arrive with tins full of food for the lads and staff.

It was one of the best things I have ever agreed to. I love my time at Emmaus and really feel part of the whole thing. Yes, Emmaus is a little rough around the edges, but that’s its beauty, it doesn’t hide its scars it just does what it does and it works.

I love the lads, the community spirit and watching them turning their lives around. I am very much a people person and have always enjoyed communicating with people. It fascinates me how so many people with so many different backgrounds and personalities are able to work together and make this project work. No two days are ever the same at Emmaus.

Emmaus is a fantastic charity that helps people in the right way. The support we receive from the local community is amazing and I would urge people to keep on supporting and spread the word.
