We are a community We have a shop

Welcome to Emmaus St Albans

Emmaus St.Albans first opened at the beginning of 2002. The building used to be the nurses home for the old Cell Barnes Hospital on Hill End Lane.

At Emmaus St.Albans we have two shops. One shop is joined to the Community building and the other shop is in Batford (Harpenden). Both shops accept donations of household furniture, some electrical goods, toys and books, bric-a-brac, bicycles, collectables and antiques.

Many of the furniture donations pass through our in-house workshop where they will be sympathetically restored. Work done will range from a simple scratch removal to complete strip down and re-finishing with French Polishing in the traditional manner by hand. The workshop will also design and build a variety of items from scratch with a particular focus on using recycled materials.

Our busy vans collect almost 20 tonnes of donated goods each month. We also operate a delivery service across St Albans and Harpenden area for our Customers. Please contact us if you have worthwhile goods to donate. Help us to re-use and re-cycle. We are members of the Furniture Re-Use Network.

Companions

At Emmaus St.Albans we currently have 24 Companions which is full capacity. We have 3 Companions doing part time college courses in Writing, English and Electrics.

As of 2009 we have entered into a partnership with St.Albans City & District Council whereby we are able to move Companions on into 3 Council flats per year with a possibility of managing a council halfway house for 4 Companions later on this year.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED

We have a number of roles for which we urgently seeking some Volunteer help. If you have time to spare and may be able to help us please see the "Jobs" section. This month's most urgent need is for a PAT Tester of donated electrical goods.

Housing Minister Grant Shapps Visiting Emmaus St Albans Community 15th December 2011

On Dec 15th 2011, Grant Shapps, the Housing Minister, and MP for Welwyn Hatfield, visited our Emmaus Community at St Albans on a fact-finding mission to see how the Emmaus model helps reduce homelessness and rough sleeping. With each Companion placement saving the UK taxpayer around £26k a year in other costs (savings to Ministry of Justice, DWP (JSA and Disability/Incapacity benefits), Dept of Health (acute admissions), Home Office (police) and Local Authorities) he was keen to see some of the other benefits an Emmaus Community offers.
