Terry Waite and Companions rap for Emmaus

Terry Waite, Emmaus UK President, Companions, students and rap artists have recorded a CD in support of Emmaus.

The song is written by record producer, Charles Bailey; best known for social campaigns like Don’t Shoot! and the Metropolitan Police recruitment “rap”, producing football records for Manchester United and Arsenal Football Clubs and for setting the speeches of veteran Labour MP, Tony Benn, to music.

Charles was inspired to support Emmaus following a visit to the Emmaus South Lambeth Community in West Norwood. He says: “Government cutbacks are bound to lead to more homelessness as more people lose their jobs”, says Bailey. “That’s the reason why I have teamed up with Emmaus. We need to help this great charity to be ready for the rush.”

Called “Coldest Nights”, the CD will form part of Emmaus’ national “Coldest Nights” campaign, launching in early January. This is normally the coldest month of the year, but homeless people are often sent back to the streets after New Year’s Day as this is when temporary Christmas shelters close.

Watch Coldest Nights video here or catch it on 'Daybreak', ITV1 Friday 17th Dec.

More information

Emmaus offers homeless men and women much more than just food or shelter; providing work and a home in supportive Communities and enabling people to move on from homelessness. Companions, as residents are called, sign off unemployment benefit to work full-time collecting, renovating and reselling donated furniture. In exchange they receive accommodation, food, clothing, a small weekly allowance and, above all, a fresh start.
