Emmaus Sheffield take on the Great Lakeland Challenge, 10th September 2010

On 10th September 2010, Emmaus Sheffield are taking part in the Great Lakeland Challenge. The team includes Lawrence Buckley, Community Leader at Emmaus Sheffield, and two Companions, Tam Comrie and Nathan Haynes. This endurance event pushes participants to the limit: first they must paddle the length of Windermere, England’s longest lake. Then they must cycle 26 miles of England’s steepest mountain pass, and finally there’s a steep climb up Scafell Pike: all in less than 12 hours.

They are now in the last stages of training, helped by a volunteer and keen cyclist who has been coaching them with gruelling 20-mile bike rides around the Peak District.

They are doing it in aid of Wooden Spoon, a charity which raises money and runs projects for underprivileged children. They hope to raise £3,800.

Lawrence Buckley said, “The Great Lakeland Challenge is a tough challenge which will demand a lot of physical and mental strength from our team, and will involve a real commitment to reaching high levels of fitness and learning new skills. Foremost in the thinking behind this challenge is the desire to adopt a new and more ambitious approach to the work we do with Companions, who struggle with the long journey of recovery from addiction and mental health issues that stand in the way of them reaching their true potential, and finding their place in society”.

Tam Comrie is no stranger to endurance challenges, having represented Scotland in the final of the Homeless World Cup in Graz in 2003.
