Welcome to Emmaus Sheffield!

Whilst the idea of setting up an Emmaus Community in Sheffield was first mooted as early as 1991, it didn’t come together as a solid group until 1998 with Martin Davies as chair. After a lot of effort and tenacity from a committed band of trustees, the site at a former cutlery works in Cadman Street was identified and the building work required to transform it into living accommodation and retail premises began.

Emmaus Sheffield opened its doors to its first Companions (as residents are referred to) in January 2008. Since then the Community has flourished and has added a garden maintenance service to the secondhand furniture shop. The next stage of development aims to extend the living quarters from 8 rooms to accommodate a total of 24 Companions.

Emmaus Sheffield is a place where people who were formerly homeless will find somewhere safe and welcoming to live; a place where they can rediscover their dignity and self-pride through being part of a working community geared towards becoming self-sufficient through social enterprise.

Becoming a Companion in an Emmaus Community is not an easy option. On joining the Community, Companions sign off primary benefits and commit themselves to volunteering full time for the Community.
