Emmaus tackles the problems of homelessness through a network of self-supporting Communities, where people are offered a home, a job and a sense of belonging. Emmaus Oxford has created a new Community for 24 residents - 'Companions' - in East Oxford. We opened our doors to our first Companions on 16th March 2009. The contractors started work at the end of February 2008, so it took just about a year: a really exciting one for us, watching the community building rise!

Our Community Building

The picture shows the new Community Building at 171 Oxford Road, at the beginning of 2009, waiting for its final fitting out. It is between the URC church on the Oxford Road and number 169, also owned by Emmaus Oxford. Click on our building site to see a few photos showing how a patch of land became an Emmaus Community!

Donating furniture

On June 1st 2008 we took over an existing furniture store, which we have partly refurbished and rebranded as the Emmaus Oxford 'Secondhand Superstore'. We are determined to make it live up to its name! The vans (we now have three) have been 're-liveried', helping to publicise the Emmaus name, logo and message around the streets of Oxford and the roads of the county.

If you have reasonable quality second hand furniture you would like to give, or if you need furniture yourself, please contact the store on 01865 763 698 (opening times Monday to Friday 9.30am - 5pm and Saturday 10am - 4pm, or you can leave a message outside these times) or email furniture@emmausoxford.org (please include a weekday contact phone number in your message too if you are offering goods, as they will need to telephone to arrange a collection time). Explain what you have to offer, and they will advise whether they are able to take it, and how long before they can collect. Many electrical appliances, but NOT gas, in working order can be accepted. Please note that upholstered items such as sofas, mattresses and other upholstered items MUST be fire retardant, ie from 1989 onwards.
