Sadness at death of Dame Anita Roddick
Emmaus UK President Terry Waite CBE has expressed his sadness at the death of the social entrepreneur: "I was devastated to hear of the premature death of Anita Roddick who was Ambassador and solid supporter of Emmaus UK".
"I have known Anita and her husband Gordon for very many years and have admired her enthusiasm and dedication particularly to the cause of the poor and deprived. In her business life she set exemplary standards and in her charitable endeavours was generous to a fault. She will be sadly missed by her friends and associates but also she will be keenly missed by those in this world who have little or nothing and for whom she fought so valiantly. May she rest in peace. Her name will certainly live on."
As well as having a long association with Emmaus Brighton and Hove, the Body Shop founder visited the Emmaus Communities in Bristol and Gloucester in December and had recently become actively involved in helping the establishment of a new project in Hampshire.
Alison Thompson, Chair of Emmaus Hampshire, says: “We were at the beginning of our relationship with Anita and we were so looking forward to working with her and having the benefit of her thoughts and ideas. Anita was inspirational. Her warmth, integrity and generosity of spirit made her exceptional and her untimely death is a great sadness for us and for all the many organisations and individuals she has supported over the years.”
