Emmaus UK celebrates life of founder

The Emmaus UK Movement and its supporters came together at St Martin in the Fields in London on 15th March at a memorial service for Abbe Pierre. The service opened with the lighting of candles by representatives of the 13 UK Emmaus Communities, to represent the legacy of the French campaigner and founder of Emmaus, who died in January.

Speakers included Emmaus UK President Terry Waite, the Ambassador of France, the Bishop of London and the founder of Emmaus in the UK, Selwyn Image.

St Martin in the Fields was chosen as the venue because of its work supporting homeless men and women in London. Abbe Pierre was a tireless campaigner for the poorest and most needy, both in his native France and around the world.
