Communities prepare for worldwide Emmaus gathering
Representatives of 9 UK Emmaus Communities will be travelling to Sarajevo to take part in the Emmaus World Assembly from 8-14 October, the first since the death of Emmaus' founder, Abbe Pierre. The event in Bosnia-Herzegovina will bring together Emmaus groups from over 30 countries in 4 continents and will provide an opportunity to share experiences and make plans for the future.
The Emmaus Movement was founded in the aftermath of the Second World War by inspirational French priest, Resistance hero and campaigner Abbe Pierre. From its roots in France, it spread across Europe and the world.
The first Emmaus Community in the UK opened in Cambridge in 1992. There are now 13 Communities in the UK, providing a home and work to homeless people who support themselves through the collection and re-sale of donated furniture and household goods.
Many other Emmaus groups, of which there are more than 300 around the world, carry out activities ranging from sustainable agriculture to providing training to street children, but all share the ideals of Abbe Pierre: serving those in greatest need and enabling the poor and excluded to support themselves and help others.
