Terry Waite given a Christmas welcome by Companions at Emmaus Cambridge

Companions and staff welcomed Terry Waite at Emmaus Cambridge's Fair. He was thanked for the work he does as Emmaus UK's President, on the 20th anniversary of his release.

The event, organised by Emmaus Cambridge Companion Shane Storey, thanked and celebrated the former hostage and humanitarian for the work he does for Emmaus. After a few short speeches, Terry was then entertained with live bands from Emmaus Cambridge and Brighton.

Terry Waite said: "For the first time in my life I found myself speechless when I was ushered into the room where so many of you were gathered. I was totally surprised as I had not the faintest idea that anything had been planned. I found myself totally moved by the occasion and even now hardly know what to say. What is clear, is that I am deeply grateful to you all for honouring me in the way that you did. As I said to one of the Companions, to be honoured by my friends the Companion to me is far greater than to receive an honour from Buckingham Palace.

We have all had our difficulties in life but you have shown, as I have also tried to demonstrate that we need not be knocked down by them. We can, and do support each other as we make our journey through life with its joys and sorrows.

Thank you again for your love and consideration. It really has been and is my privilege to work alongside you all. Those of you who carry the name 'Companion' carry it with pride."

Merry Christmas from all at Emmuas.
