Grant Shapps MP makes key homelessness announcement at Emmaus St Albans

Grant Shapps MP visted Emmaus St Albans on 15 December 2011 and made a key announcement on homelessness.

The housing minister announced his appeal to the public to help rough sleepers by calling one of the 24-hour hotlines to bring urgent attention to rough sleepers. For the first time, a list of these numbers will be available on the Government's Communities website. He also announced his New Year's Resolution, to establish a new single helpline number which will provide a single point of contact for people across the country to get help for rough sleepers in their neighbourhood.

He said: "Christmas is a time for goodwill, and with winter rapidly approaching, it's more important than ever to ensure that residents aren't "roofless" in their area".

As part of his visit, Shapps also visited the Community accomodation, shop and workshop, and was impressed at the work undertaken by Companions, including the leather work done by Companion Billy.
