Heatwave for first UK Emmaus Summer Work Camp

In sweltering weather, 21 volunteers and Companions from 6 countries gathered at Emmaus Village Carlton for the first ever Emmaus Summer Work Camp to take place in the UK.

The aim was to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Emmaus by bringing together Companions and Volunteers to work alongside each other, get to know one another and develop their understanding of Emmaus and the idea of Solidarity - helping those in greater need.

The work included building a patio at Emmaus Village Carlton, garden work at Emmaus Coventry and preparations for a 2 day event in Northampton market promoting re-use.

The Northampton event featured demonstrations of furniture restoration (above), a speech by Terry Waite and a Solidarity sale, which raised £200 for the Hope Centre, a local day centre for homeless and disadvantaged people.

The Community Leader at Emmaus Village Carlton, Helen Jago, said, “It was so good to see all the Companions and other volunteers working and relaxing together. The atmosphere was great."

One of the main aims of the week was to promote awareness and understanding of Solidarity through discussions, videos and speakers.

Reflecting on the work camp, a Companion said afterwards, “I learned a lot about Solidarity and enjoyed the DVDs on the Benin project and Emmaus. The short film on Abbé Pierre, who founded Emmaus 60 years ago, was fantastic."
