New Emmaus Group launched in Hastings and Rother!
A new initiative has been launched to set up an Emmaus Community in East Sussex. Emmaus Hastings and Rother is the newest Emmaus project established in the UK and will work to bring the tried and tested Emmaus approach to homelessness to the area. The Group was welcomed as the 27th member of Emmaus UK at the recent Federation Assembly in Derbyshire.
The local Steering Committee, made up of thirteen volunteers from the area, has received advice and help from the nearby Emmaus Brighton and Hove Community, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year and provides home and work to up to 40 men and women in Portslade.
“When we visited the Emmaus Community in Brighton, we recognised that this was something that could bring great benefits to the Hastings & Rother area" said Christopher Maxwell-Stewart, Company Secretary and prime mover from Emmaus Hastings & Rother.
"That was before we knew that the Brighton Community were committed to giving us £200,000 to help start a new Community! We have been deeply touched by the support that is being offered to our Hastings Group by the Companions (formerly homeless residents of an Emmaus Community) in Brighton who are offering to run a shop in Hastings to help us get started.”
