MBE for Chair of Emmaus Hampshire

Alison Thompson of Emmaus Hampshire was honoured with an MBE in the New Year Honours list in recognition of her services to homeless people. She has been Chair of the local Emmaus Group since 2000, before which she worked with another homelessness charity, Trinity Winchester.

Alison was instrumental in setting up the Emmaus Community at Bar End Road, Winchester, raising £3 million to build the ecologically friendly building and set up the furniture recycling business. The Community opened in 2009 and now provides a home and work to up to 23 formerly homeless men and women. Residents, known as Companions, work full time in the Community, which runs two shops in Winchester and Eastleigh selling donated furniture and household goods .

All Emmaus Communities are set up by local volunteers; find out more about how Emmaus Communities start.
