Emmaus Gloucestershire's Nailsworth shop wins Highly Commended in Charity Shop Challenge
Congratulations to Emmaus Gloucestershire's Nailsworth shop! It won Highly Commended in Recycle for Gloucestershire's Charity Shop Challenge.
Charity shops were asked to come up with an original window display that reflected re-use and living a green lifestyle.
The Nailsworth shop's colourful display was created by local artist Ellie Sumter.
Jethro Randolph, manager of the Nailsworth shop, says: "It was a great opportunity to show people that there are less obvious ways of being green. Charity shops are not always thought of in that way. It was also a good way to help Ellie out, who is the niece of one of our volunteers and was looking to set up art groups for children, teaching them about recycling. The display uses items from the shop, as well as things that we couldn't sell, such as broken crockery and old clothes. The figures in the back are likenesses of some of our regular customers. The idea is that they have all come together for a tea party."
"For us, recycling is more than just selling donated items. We use some of the donated items for our shop fixtures and fittings instead of buying them - and, in a way, the re-use of people, as well as things, is one of the raison-d'êtres of Emmaus."
16 shops entered the challenge and the overall winner was Sue Ryder Care in Stow-on-the-Wold. It was a part of the county-wide Waste Reduction Challenge, which took place between 20th and 28th November 2010.
