On the Buses

Phil Highley, 71-year old trustee and volunteer at Emmaus Coventry, has returned triumphant from an three-week sponsored bus ride around Emmaus Communities, using only his bus pass. During August 2010 he covered 1280 miles, on 81 buses, belonging to 17 different operators. He visited 17 Emmaus Communities in total, raising £1000 for Emmaus so far.

He wore a t-shirt with “I’m riding for Emmaus” on the back, to draw attention to the trip.
Phil says: “What struck me, everywhere I went, was the warmth of the welcome, particularly from Companions, and the great untapped potential for society as a whole that lies within Emmaus Communities. The concept of Solidarity seems to be taken on board very quickly and easily by Companions who are motivated to give back to society.”

He says there were many differences between Communities but: “the similarities I experienced in the welcome and hospitality and potential benefit Companions have to offer society far outweighed these differences."
