Round up of the year

Autumn 2011

Well here we are again time for another newsletter. Actually this one is well over due and I apologise to the regular supporters and readers but it has been so very busy here over the last 10 months we have struggled to find time to fit it all in. Because of this I thought I would start with a review of the year to fill you all in with what we have been up to. The biggest news is that we have expanded our Community from 15 to 18. We have rented a small house where the Companions
that have moved in have more independence but still receive the support of the Community.

Ooh LaLa!

Summer 2010

Just as our newsletter was about to go to press we went to see our friends at Emmaus Sheffield. It was the first annual ‘Ooh la la!’ international solidarity day for Sheffield.
It’s always great to visit other Emmaus Communities as the welcome you get is second to none and Sheffield was no exception. Our small vanload set out at 8am on a sunny Saturday in July. We took with us prizes for our tombola stall, make up for our facepainting stall as well as our sound equipment for the musical acts.

HRH a big hit in Coventry

Spring 2010

On 10 December HRH The Duchess of Cornwall visited Emmaus Coventry and Warwickshire. After being welcomed by local dignitaries, HRH began her visit by meeting local people who have helped Emmaus Coventry in the 18 months since we re-opened, including volunteers, Rolls Royce and Richard, a worker from a local cash and carry who always makes sure we are aware of ‘bargains’ and who has gone out of his way to help us get the best from our food budget. Next it was on to the Trustees, where the Duchess chatted about the work of Emmaus and signed a visitors book.
Despite the cold and the wet ground Her Royal Highness then went to visit the newly cleared ground where the allotment will be, and saw the site for the chicken coop. She was able to talk to workers from Barclays who spent a whole day clearing the ground initially and also to Companions who have
been digging manure into the beds to prepare for next spring...

Celebrating with Terry Waite

Autumn 2009

The Day That Changed My Life campaign is marking the 60th Anniversary of the Emmaus Movement by calling on people to share their stories of significant moments in their lives.
Most of us have people to share our good and bad moments with. But for those of us who don’t, life can become very hard.
Many people find themselves homeless because they didn’t have anyone to help them through the difficult moments. No one to hear about the grief of a bereavement, work stress that has led to secret drinking or the disintegration of a marriage.

Arson attack at shop site

Summer 2009

Emmaus Coventry was hit by an arson attack at the beginning of June.
Our new portakabin was destroyed at half three on a Saturday morning. The portakabin had only been delivered the weekend before.
As devastating as this was, the community spirit really pulled everyone together. Companions and volunteers worked constantly until all the remains were cleared away for fear of a repeat attack.
We also had a large skip donated by DG Skips 024 76637918 that we were very grateful for as we managed to clear all the debris left after the firefighters departed without messing up our delivery van.
Although our portakabin was destroyed the fire brigade did a fantastic job stopping the fire from spreading to our shop which would have spelt disaster for Emmaus Coventry..... To read more about this story and others download this newsletter.
