Brighton Companion works on award winning garden

Andy Bashford of Emmaus Brighton and Hove is part of a team of horticulture students that has created a tropical garden for the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. The garden was awarded a silver-gilt medal in the small garden category.

The project was part of the City of Brighton College’s NVQ level 2 course in horticulture, which Andy has just completed after attending weekly classes for a year. Each student contributed to the planning and building of the garden, with Andy particularly responsible for health and safety, risk assessment and transporting the plants from Brighton to the show in London.

Andy has been a Companion at the Brighton Community for 18 months. He initially worked in the kitchen but moved to the grounds team after 8 months when his diabetes became a problem. “Gardening helps my diabetes”, he explains, “because I don’t get so stressed”.

The Emmaus grounds and garden centre have seen the benefits of Andy’s gardening skills, with colourful displays brightening up the car park and other areas. He now hopes to go on to study for the RHS advanced certificate in horticulture
