Emmaus Brighton and Hove tap into local talent

Staff and volunteers are pioneering a project to involve more local people in the life of the Emmaus Brighton and Hove Community.

Business manager Joel Lewis came up with the idea of tapping into local talent to turn donated materials into gifts to sell for the benefit of the Community.

At the launch of the project, known as the 'Goodwill Co-op', about 40 local people signed up to become involved. Now a group meets regularly at the Community to swap ideas, pick up supplies from the well stocked Art and Crafts store and drop off finished items.

Below, a small part of the amazing variety of donated goods in the Arts and Crafts Store.......and see photos above.

From jam jar to tealight holder... imaginative re-use of donated materials

The concept of the Goodwill Co-op succeeds at several levels; materials which might otherwise end up in landfill are transformed into imaginative items; local people get the chance to develop their creative talent and forge new friendships; they get the satisfaction of knowing their time and talents are helping others; the Community benefits directly from the proceeds from sales and from a greater local awareness of its activities.

As Terry Waite, President of Emmaus UK, summarises: "The Goodwill Co-op enables people to use their energies and talents to help those who are less fortunate than themselves”
