President of Emmaus UK: Terry Waite CBE

Terry Waite CBE

In January 1987, while negotiating for the release of Western hostages in Lebanon, Terry Waite himself was taken captive and remained in captivity for 1,763 days, the first four years of which were spent in total solitary confinement.

Since his release, he has written books, lectured and devoted himself to humanitarian activities. He works for various charities, but the issue of homelessness is very close to his heart.

"Fortunately most of us will never experience what it is like to be homeless: It is frightening and depressing and can affect people from every walk of life. I became involved with Emmaus 11 years ago following nearly five years as a hostage. It was then I experienced what many people go through. I endured the misery, the sense of isolation, fear, boredom, the despair and that sense of helplessness and exclusion from ordinary, everyday life, which is so much part of both captivity and homelessness.

Emmaus is a model for a new compassionate structure in society. I intend to do everything in my power to help Emmaus reach the goal of a Community in every significant town or city. When I was released from my prison in Beirut I was very glad to be able to come home. Emmaus is home to many people who might otherwise be destitute, and is certainly worthy of your support."

Royal Patron: HRH The Duchess of Cornwall

HRH The Duchess of Cornwall

The Duchess of Cornwall became Royal Patron of Emmaus UK in 2006 and has visited Emmaus Bristol to meet the residents and see their work.

"I was delighted and honoured to be asked to become Patron of Emmaus UK and it gave me the greatest pleasure to accept. I have been deeply impressed by what I have heard of the work of the charity, and the opportunities it gives to those who have lost so much to re-build their lives and regain their dignity and self-respect."
