Research shows savings to the tax payer
Emmaus Communities can generate savings in public spending in excess of £800,000 each year, according to research carried out at Emmaus Village Carlton in Bedfordshire by a team from Cambridge University led by Christine Whitehead, Professor of Housing Economics at LSE and Director of the Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research.
Emmaus has a holistic approach to the complex problems associated with homelessness and the money saved by Emmaus Communities is made up both of services foregone and the preventative work undertaken at Communities to ensure that Companions are, for instance, healthier, more gainfuly employed and less likely to offend.
Speaking at the launch event, Emmaus supporter comedian Harry Enfield said, 'Dependency is a great disabler. When you're on the streets you feel worthless and you have no self-esteem. One of the great things about Emmaus is that it is an enabler. Apart from the amazing savings to the tax payer, Emmaus gives people back their self-esteem.'
